What is Scent work?
Scent Work is a sport/hobby that owner/dog teams participate in together.
It is based on what working K9's do when looking for odors of illegal items at airports, during traffic stops, and in and around buildings.
WhY Do you do it?
It's fun - and we get to bring our dogs. The same reason people play golf, tennis, or participate in any other hobby they enjoy.
What are the dogs looking for?
The dogs are trained to find essential oils. The oils can be Birch, Anise, Clove or Cypress. 2 drops of one of the oils is place on a Qtip.
The Qtip is then placed in a tiny container to keep the oil from coming in contact when anything.
The scented Qtip and container (called "the hide") are then hidden somewhere, and the dog has to find it.
Types of possible tiny containers, or Scent Vessels
HOW DO YOU KEEP THE HIDES IN PLACE?
Hides can be kept in place using several methods. This video shows examples of securing the hide with a magnet and tin, and well as with museum putty.
Hides are picked up after searches and not left behind in the area.
WhaT DOES A SEARCH LOOK LIKE?
This is an example of what a search may look like. This one takes place on an outdoor porch area.
- One dog searches at a time. In many cases owner/dog teams don't watch each other search so the hide location isn't revealed.
